"I was a Beautiful Day"

Here is the opening monologue from the play "I was a Beautiful Day".

ACT ONE

A room in Dunard Psychiatric Unit, 2005. It is an old Victorian style building on mainland Scotland.

DAN is in the room. He carefully repositions a chair which has gone awry. Makes sure the bed is exact. He starts to write.

 

DAN

A landmark.

A seamark.

A traverse between two points.

A comharr.

A comharr is something which tethers you

Marks your place

Between land and sea

Only marked by the jagged snaim of cliffs

Or white comb of wave

Birds eye only sees it but

There it is.

It moves into position

A green sward with a tulach of rock

Cairn tipped green with your

Gneiss lined longtitude

A straight tether

Bacan

This is what I need

Some kind of feist rope straight

As a finger pointed

To tie me to earth

That invisible line

Which says to me

You are here

You have arrived

You know your purpose.

We all need this. We all need a comharr. Places named. Anchors.
